We established our first Rucksack Inn at Hong Kong Street, a 26-bed backpacker hostel that occupied the second level of a 4-storey converted shophouse. The backpacker hostel industry was uncharted water then, but we saw an opportunity. We offered what others didn’t – all-day breakfast, free WiFi, well-managed bathrooms, and a space where strangers can forge friendships. We took on the group name, OCG Holdings, with a vision to highlight the backpacker's scene. We also took down the Best Atmosphere Award, rated by customers of HostelBookers.
We expanded Rucksack Inn to take over another unit in Hong Kong Street and started the backpackers ‘culture’ in Singapore. While our co-founder and COO came out as champion in the Asian reality TV Show, ‘Can You Serve’, our hostel also took down the Best Staff Award, rated by customers of HostelBookers.
We opened our next Rucksack Inn at Lavender Street and it soon caught the eyes of the media with our first media feature. We also bagged a couple of awards like the Excellence Award and Best Cleanliness Award, rated by customers of HostelBookers.
Our next Rucksack Inn took a spot at Temple Street and made headlines again, gaining more accolades as well including Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence, and winner of the HOSCAR Awards.
We renamed our company, The Hip And Happening Group, and launched two new brands The Rucksack and Barkode to meet the needs of our ever-expanding customer base and the dynamics of the travel and leisure industry. Our first brand Rucksack Inn also went through a radical brand change to emerge as a budget accommodation.
The Hip and Happening Group now has footprints in both Singapore and Malaysia, and we are expanding even more so stay tuned for more exciting developments!
